Dr. Weinreb’s Early Career
Dr. Weinreb is a 1966 summa cum laude graduate of the Jewish Theological Seminary and Downstate Medical Center. Dr. Weinreb did his residency in internal medicine at Albert Einstein College of Medicine. He also completed a fellowship at the Mount Sinai School of Medicine in New York City and held a faculty position there.
Dr. Weinreb became interested in Gaucher disease and other lysosomal disorders (LSDs) in 1977 as a research associate for Dr. Roscoe Brady at the National Institutes of Health (NIH). Dr. Weinreb demonstrated that Gaucher disease is an LSD. He also helped formulate some of the purification procedures that led to the development of Ceredase®, the first approved treatment for Gaucher disease.
Dr. Weinreb’s Roles and Awards
Dr. Weinreb practiced hematology and medical oncology in South Florida for nearly 40 years. His many roles include:
- Fellow of the American College of Physicians
- Member of the American Society of Hematology, the American Society of Clinical Oncology and the American Society of Human Genetics
- Associate professor of medicine at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine
- Clinical professor of medicine (hematology) at the NOVA Southeastern College of Osteopathic Medicine
- Ethics committee member of the Florida Society of Clinical Oncology
- Founding physician advisor for the International Collaborative Gaucher Group (ICGG), where he is co-chair to the international board of scientific advisors and regional coordinator for the southeastern U.S.
- Active participant in the Gaucher and Fabry Registries
Dr. Weinreb’s awards include:
- Humanitarian Award from the Israel Cancer Research Fund
- “See the Light” Award from the Matthew Forbes Romer Foundation for Children’s Genetic Diseases of the Brain
Dr. Weinreb Today
Dr. Weinreb currently sees patients at the University of Miami UHealth Sylvester Cancer Center in Coral Springs, Florida. He devotes his professional attention to research and management of patients with LSDs, especially Gaucher disease and Fabry disease.
Dr. Weinreb is also interested in Jewish history, archaeology and law. He enjoys traveling, hiking and fishing. He is a proud and devoted husband, father of 3 wonderful children and indulgent grandpa to 9 beautiful grandchildren.
